TAXIWAY ...

... earlier Transport route - today Hiking trail

In the past, copper ore was only transported down into the valley in winter using sledges and sack trains. Around 1906/07, the 4,400 m long roller conveyor was built for ore transportation. From then on, the loaded hoists could be pushed on rails, supported by the slight gradient, to the cable car, which was also newly built. This was used to transport the ore down into the valley to Außerfragant.

Today, the roller coaster, a beautiful, secured hiking trail, leads visitors to the Großfraganter Alm area. Along the flat, family-friendly path, viewing benches invite you to linger. The 7 km long Rollbahnweg is thus the access route to the Großfragant high Alpine pasture area.

The themed hiking trail in the Großfragant "drunter & drüber" is dedicated to the former copper mining (drunter) and alpine farming (drüber) in the Fragant. Mining and agriculture have always been closely intertwined in the Alpine region. This was also the case in the Großfragant, where many farmers or chastisers found employment in copper mining as miners, lumberjacks, charcoal burners or wagon drivers. Mining was carried out in Großfragant for over three centuries until it finally came to an end at the end of the First World War. Today, abandoned tunnels, remains of walls, piles of rubble, rusty tools and machine parts still bear witness to the once intensive extraction of mineral resources.

You can listen to the fairy tale "Matryoshka in the mountains" at three audio stations. Artistic installations and viewing benches along the themed trail make this an experience for all the senses. The initiators of this project are Dr. Werner Koroschitz(historian and former owner of the Großfragant) and Josef Pacher(landlord of the Eggerhütte), artistic installations designed by Uli Vonbank-Schedler. The themed trail was officially opened in August 2019.
